“The G-15 remains convinced that the eradication of forced lablour is essential for the full enjoyment of human rights and human dignity. In this vein, the G-15 is committed to cooperate within the ILO and other agencies to combat this unlawful practice which accounts for the nearly 21 million souls that continue to be silent victims of this scourge.
 
Mr. W.J.L.U. Wijayaweera, Secretary of Labour and Labour Relations made this observation when he delivered the G-15 Joint Statement on behalf of G-15 Group at the 103rd Session of the International Labour Conference held from  28 May – June 12 2014 in Geneva.

On behalf of the government and the delegation of Sri Lanka, let me congratulate you and the Vice Presidents on your election to preside over the 98th session of the International Labour Conference.  We also wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the Director-General for presenting to us his report, “Tackling the Global Job Crisis: Recovery through Decent Work Policies” which provides the background to larger part of work in the Conference including discussions at the plenary.

 "We are determined that in a democracy like ours where political views can be expressed freely, political objectives must be realised through negotiation and dialogue and through compromise. There can be no room for extremism, and even less for violence," said President Mahinda Rajapaksa, addressing the 96th Sessions of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, today (June 15). 
 
"Terrorism has no place in the contemporary world. As a government, we are not prepared, at any cost, to bow down to terrorism," said President Rajapaksa, who asked: "Would any of your governments submit to terrorism had they been in our position?"

It is indeed an honour for me to chair this ECOSOC High Level Segment Roundtable on globalization and labour migration.   I thank the organizers of the High Level Segment for arranging what I believe will be a very interesting and relevant discussion and also for the preparation of the comprehensive Issues Note, which will be elaborated by the    Co-Moderators.  I will make only a few introductory remarks at this stage.

ECOSOC is welcome to Geneva.  Here in this serene environment and the background culture of peace, there is a renaissance of multilateralism, which could be  attributed to both wise and energetic leadership in the UN and international organizations in Geneva as well as the serious and constructive dialogue  witnessed among all stakeholders.  Our efforts are aimed to both build a vision for the future founded  on a sound knowledge  base with agreed political objectives, as well as practical work at the technical level to design appropriate projects and programmes to be implemented at national, regional and global levels.
