HRC 2026

Ambassador Sumith Dassanayake, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva highlighted Sri Lanka’s continued journey towards economic, social and political transformation, speaking under the high-level segment of the UN Human Rights Council on 25 February 2026.

Referring to the remarks made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath in 2025 at the Human Rights Council, the Permanent Representative reassured “Sri Lanka’s commitment to advancing ethical governance, national unity and reconciliation while opposing external action”.

Highlighting the Government’s priority for reconciliation and national unity, Permanent Representative Sumith Dassanayake briefed the Council on measures taken by Sri Lanka to strengthen the domestic institutions vis-à-vis the Office on Missing Persons, the Office for Reparations, and the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation.

Further, the Permanent Representative informed the Council that discussions are underway to formulate a Truth and Reconciliation Commission and public consultations are also ongoing on the initial draft of the Protection of the State from Terrorism (PSTA) Bill which will lead to the eventual repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

Reaffirming Sri Lanka’s readiness to engage with the UN Human Rights Council, the Office of the High Commissioner and the broader international community, in a spirit of partnership and mutual respect, the Permanent Representative reassured Sri Lanka’s continued commitment in advancing reconciliation and reform through domestic processes.

The 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council commenced in Geneva on 23 February 2026 and its high-level segment was held from 23-25 February.
