The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva and Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Switzerland, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the World Trade Organization (WTO), hosted an event to celebrate the 78th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka with the participation of Sri Lankan community in Switzerland, at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) premises in Geneva on 17th February 2026.

The celebration commenced with the singing of the national anthem followed by observing a two-minute silence to honour those who sacrificed their lives to safeguard Sri Lanka's freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity.  

Welcoming the Sri Lankan community in Switzerland to the celebration, Ambassador Sumith Dassanayake, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations at Geneva and Consul General of Sri Lanka in Switzerland highlighted that under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka the country is achieving financial stability and sustained economic growth, while addressing corruption, ensuring ethical governance and the rule of law. Ambassador Dassanayake underscored that this journey is well supported by Sri Lanka’s strong international relations and friendship with the other countries. In his remarks, Ambassador Dassanayake referred to the confidence that Sri Lanka has won among international partners and investors, emphasizing the importance of diversifying Sri Lanka’s export market and attracting more foreign investments. While noting the record number of tourists’ arrivals to Sri Lanka in January 2026, Ambassador Dassanayake encouraged the Sri Lankan community to promote Sri Lanka as an ideal tourist destination, especially among the people in Switzerland.

Ambassador Dassanayake also appreciated unwavering support extended by the Sri Lankan community when Sri Lanka was faced with challenges, in particular, in the aftermath of the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah. He invited all Sri Lankans to continue their collaboration and contribution towards economic development and prosperity of Sri Lanka.

As the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka, Ambassador Dassanayake reaffirmed his commitment to constructive engagement and cooperation with the UN and specialized agencies in Geneva for the benefit of Sri Lanka.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the World Trade Organization in Geneva R.G.S. Wijesekara.

The multi-cultural performances by Sri Lankan children added colour to the event.

Sri Lankans representing all ethnicities joined the celebrations and were treated to an array of authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.
